Walnuts (Akhrot)

For a long time, Akhrot has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of amnesia. Walnuts are native to Asia and grow inside green pods that turn wood-like brown as they dry. There are 21 walnut species but those chocolate-brown colored are the ones used in the Hindi cuisine to prepare dishes such as:

• Walnut-Yogurt Dip (Akhrot Ka Raita)
• Black Walnut Cake Recipe
• Walnut Burfi (Akhrot Laddu)
• CashewWalnut Laddu (Kaju-Akhrot Burfi)
• Honey Whole Wheat Bread
• Walnut-Coconut Caramel Toffee

In Asia, the most popular walnut species is the Persian walnut, which produces delicious nuts. Walnuts are also used in cardiovascular medicine to reduce fats damage produced to the heart by unhealthy food. In kitchen, Persian walnuts are often substituted by black walnuts or butternut walnuts, both native to North America.
