Popular in Oriental cooking, star anise (Chakra Phool) is commonly
used in the preparation of masala sauce, curries, and other braises
and sauces, although it is also used in desserts. Its flavor similar
to anise or fennel but it can be used as a substitute for bay
leaves.
The spice is native to China, and was widely used in Chinese medicine.
It is also one of the ingredients of the traditional Chinese five-spice
cooking powder. In modern alternative medicine and aromatherapy
it is the base for anise essential oils. Star anise seeds are
good to chewe after meals to aid digestion. |
