1 1/4 (one and one-fourth) c. flour 1 c. sugar 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 3/4 c. milk 1/3 c. shortening 1 egg 2 tsp. grated orange peel 1/4 c. sliced almonds 1 Tbsp. sugar 2 Tbsp. orange-flavored liqueur Preheat oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit. Grease and flour 9-in. round layer pan or 8-in. square or rectangular pan. Beat all ingredients except almonds, 1 Tbsp. sugar and the liqueur in large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 3 mins. Pour into pan; sprinkle and distribute with almonds. Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, round pan 40 mins., the square or rectangular pan 40 to 45 mins. Sprinkle and distribute with 1 Tbsp. sugar; drizzle with liqueur. Cool 10 to 15 mins. Remove from pan; cool completely. Yields 8 servings.
