Southeast Asian Cuisine & Food Culture


The Southeast Asian region stretches form east of India and Bangladesh to South of China along with Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia. This region has got a rich culture of ethnic foods and is considered as a cook’s paradise. The traditional cuisine of this region is a blend of flavors and exotic spices and ingredients local only to the southeast part of Asia. The countries falling under the Southeast Asian region have their own identities but their cuisines are somewhat similar and share many staple ingredients and cooking methods.

The cuisines of each country within the region have a reflection of its historical past. Indonesia and Malaysia are ethnically Islamic countries where pork is virtually eliminated from the diet. In the Recipes of Vietnam you will find a blend of French occupation in their dishes. Spanish and American accents can easily be found in Filipino Cuisines. The cuisines of this region are also influenced by its neighbor’s mainly China and India. The Portuguese who arrived here in the 16th century, brought with them chile which makes the Southeast Asian meals hot and spicy.

The most common ingredients found in almost all Southeast Asian Cuisines are coconut grass, Thai basil, lemon grass, fish paste and various varieties of chiles. The food prepared in this region is generally healthy with the use of various greens and vegetables. This region is famous for its variety of nutritious soups and consommé’s, as well as its diverse sweet and spicy flavor combinations. The eating habits of peoples differ within the Southeast Asian region with Thai’s using spoons, fork and knife while eating, Singaporeans, Malaysians and Indonesians eating with their hands and using the spoons for serving food and Vietnamese using chopsticks for consuming food.
