The Southeast Asian region stretches form east of India and Bangladesh to South of China along with Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia. This region has got a rich culture of ethnic foods and is considered as a cook’s paradise. The traditional cuisine of this region is a blend of flavors and exotic spices and ingredients local only to the southeast part of Asia. The countries falling under the Southeast Asian region have their own identities but their cuisines are somewhat similar and share many staple ingredients and cooking methods.
The cuisines of each country within the region have a reflection of its historical past. Indonesia and Malaysia are ethnically Islamic countries where pork is virtually eliminated from the diet. In the Recipes of Vietnam you will find a blend of French occupation in their dishes. Spanish and American accents can easily be found in Filipino Cuisines. The cuisines of this region are also influenced by its neighbor’s mainly China and India. The eating habits of peoples differ within the Southeast Asian region with Thai’s using spoons, fork and knife while eating, Singaporeans, Malaysians and Indonesians eating with their hands and using the spoons for serving food and Vietnamese using chopsticks for consuming food.
